I Tried One of Those Blender Bombs—And They Made My Smoothie So Much Better

Plus, some say they can help you lose weight and gain energy along the way.

I’d been in a bit of a breakfast rut lately, and was sick of feeling my stomach rumble before noon every day. I was on the lookout for something easy and nutritious that would both power me through my morning workout and keep me full until lunchtime.

I love following food and health accounts on Instagram for meal inspiration, and have been seeing testimonials for these “Blender Bombs” everywhere— how much they’ve helped people lose weight, regulate their digestive system, curb cravings, and have the energy to keep up with their kids. I decided to give them a shot, and I’m officially never looking back.

I loved the Blender Bombs right away, as the nutrition label and ingredients list are impressive (and, okay, the packaging is really cute!) Plus, they pack in 70 percent of your daily potassium needs—a nutrient most Americans don’t get enough of. Adding one of these to my smoothie made it feel like a satisfying meal for once, and I didn’t even start daydreaming about my lunch until it was actually time to eat it.

Blender bombs are essentially nutrient-packed balls made from whole, plant-based ingredients that you can pop into your blender for a fat-, fiber-, and protein-boosted smoothie. They come in seven varieties, from cacao & peanut butter to goji, coconut, & acaí. I opted for the original and aloe & collagen flavors. I also think they would make a perfect snack on their own!

Each variety is made with similar ingredients—like dates, nuts, and seeds—that can be expensive on their own. I liked that I could get a ball full of flax, chia, hemp, and other “superfoods” without buying bags of them at the grocery store to individually portion into my smoothie every day.

The website advises popping one of these babies into your blender along with a banana, some greens, and a liquid of your choice for a seriously healthy and satiating breakfast. I like to experiment with different flavors—like peanut butter and jelly with frozen raspberries—to curb my powerful sweet tooth. I love the way the Blender Bombs improve the texture of my smoothies without affecting the flavor (or having a weird aftertaste.)

Blender Bombs were created by Helen Hall, founder of Hushup + Hustle, a wellness brand focused on living an 80/20 plant-based lifestyle, free of food guilt and anxiety. Hall created these Blender Bombs to help her large Instagram following realistically achieve greater health without the hassle. They look like energy bites you might find at a health food store or coffee shop, but are much lower in sugar and more nutritious.

Blender Bombs are currently sold solely on Hall’s site, hushupandhustle.com, and you can even set up a monthly subscription if you are as into them as I am! They also sell a grain-free Blender Bomb granola for topping your oatmeal or yogurt, but I like snacking on it straight from the bag.

The nutrition is pretty similar across all seven varieties, and the original flavor has 130 calories, 8g of fat, 11g of carbs, and 4g each of fiber and protein.

One of those days …

Please excise any serious typos – there, I made one already, excuse came out as excise – I am injured. Not seriously. Hardly at all in fact, just enough to make typing a hit and miss affair. This morning has been one of those mornings when a couple of things happened to knock the day slightly off kilter and then you’re waiting for the other thing to happen. You know… disasters come in threes and all that. Although mine are more mishap than disaster, but still…

First thing happened when I was barely awake. Actually, no, that’t not right. First thing happened while I was still snuggled under the duvet. I missed the snow! I’ve been waiting all winter and the first real smattering we have comes down before I’ve opened my eyes and by the time I’ve stirred, it’s gone.

(This is from 15th January for illustrative purposes. It lasted all of 5 minutes as did last night’s – apparently).

I thought back to last weekend when my two-year-old grand-daughter, who has never experienced snow but is obssessed with it, had a long, forthright argument with me during a heavy hailstorm. She was entranced, kneeling up at the window eyes alight with amazement, mouthing ‘It’s snowing, look it’s snowing!’ in such a small voice overcome by the wonder of it all. We all tried to tell her they were hailstones, but she held firm and fast to her fantasy, and we finally agreed, yes, it was snowing.

Disappointed, I got up and went to the bathroom. We had a West Wing marathon last night and as I came out I was still drowsily thinking about it all when I was brought up short by a searing pain as I trapped my finger in the door and caught it on the edge of the catch. After all the usual squeezing of said finger while hopping around shouting and receiving no help – as always when disaster strikes, everyone has headed for the hills and you realise you’re on your own – I looked down and saw blood dripping down the bannister, pouring from my nail bed as my finger throbbed. Those cartoon disasters came to mind where a character gets hit on the head or hand and a huge lump forms and throbs in lurid colours. It was a tiny cut, but you’d have thought that at the very least my nail and fingertip were missing, what with all the pain and blood.

Please note: there really should be an image here of my injured finger, but I spared you the sight of it. (You wouldn’t have been able to see it anyway without floodlights and magnifying glass! – ed.)

I made it to the kitchen and thrust my finger under the cold water in an attempt to staunch the bleeding. It carried on. I couldn’t get to the plasters in the cupboard without leaving a trail of blood the likes of which you only see in episodes of CSI! I grabbed a clean tea towel and held it around the finger but every time I tried to release it, the blood gushed. Honestly, it was the tiniest cut, you’d need a magnifying glass to see it. (Told you! – ed.)

Finally, my husband returned from his cycle ride and managed to get a plaster onto the finger. Crisis over. I listened to his usual recounting of where he went, how many miles, how fast, who he saw, punctures etc etc (well, listening might be overstating it a bit), as I got my morning juice out of the fridge and a straw from the cupboard. Intending to seem fascinated, I turned to ask him a question and…

I caught the straw with my sleeve, the jar went over and before my husband had even managed to remove his helmet and cycling shoes, he was on his knees dealing with the second disaster: sticky orange liquid was oozing across the kitchen counter, down the cupboards and fridge, soaking into the hanging tea towels, the leg of my jeans, the tops of my trainers and across the floor!

There were no ripe bananas for my breakfast smoothie! Now I know that in the grand scheme of things, this is so insignificant as not to be worthy of a mention. But in the context of my morning, this really is a disaster. They were green as green could be. So I decided to use avocado and just put things together and see how it turned out. I had some coconut milk that needed using up, a kiwi fruit, some romaine lettuce. A little wheatgrass powder. I imagined a vibrant green smoothie. But I couldn’t leave well alone and I added blueberries and açaì powder. I got khaki! And it was so thick I could have taken a knife and fork to it! But it tasted a lot better than it looks, really it did. Recipe here.

So that was my morning. My husband fared a little better, he is back cycling after a 9 month lay-off following an accident and a broken arm that needed some metalwork. But he posted a birthday card to his cousin and then realised he’d forgotten to put the stamp on. Then of course he had to start washing floors and cupboards and jeans when he arrived home.


Just want to confirm before i splurge: will i finally ACTUALLY be able to make smoothies at home with a vitamix??

I got my vitamix for the purpose of smoothies and discovered how great it is at making soups too. I would say I make more soups than smoothies these days and it is great.

Yes Vitamix will make smoothies out of anything.

The only issue I've found is typically you need to make a very large smoothie or 2 smoothies to get enough material in the container to blend properly.

This has also been my experience.

It also took more liquid than I expected (if you don't want to use the tamper).

I love this question. You will! Though cafes have cool refrigerator smoothies that keep everything cold. Blending generates heat so sometimes I like to chill my smoothies in the blender in the freezer before pouring. But yes it will be better than any blender you’ve ever owned.

Yes! My friend had a ninja and after she saw my Vitamix in action she was sold - and said she realized that all of the recipes that called for “a high powered blender” meant “vitamix.”

Yes, since getting our vitamix in mid December I have made green smoothies almost every morning. The first time I made one it clicked that this was how all those smoothie recipe pictures look so amazing!

Yes! I have the A3500, and it blends perfectly. It can make steaming hot soup from friction alone, and no visible particles. Also chomps ice and frozen ingredients like a boss.

I've had two blenders in my life that made smoothies.

Before we had the Vitamix, which is the one that makes good smoothies, we had a Ninja. It did work, but after a year or so the blades got pretty dull. But it did actually work, it made smoothies.

But the Vitamix, it makes good smoothies.

lol it will liquify anything

I recently went to a café and ordered a smoothie, I noticed that they had two blenders - Blendtec and Vitamix. I was super curious, since I've never used a Blendtec before, and I asked which one the staff member preferred.

She said the Vitamix, hands down, because of the tamper.

I've had a Vitamix for about 6 years now (two different models) and it is the best blender I've ever used. It even obliterates tiny seeds. I make my kids chocolate milkshakes, with soy milk, ice, flax seeds, dried dates, and oats, and they come out smooth and frothy.

If you haven't seen a promo video of a Vitamix yet, hop over to YouTube and watch one, those are what sold the machine for me.

Probably the biggest downsides are that you need to make a large volume for it to blend properly, although you could get a smaller container of you get an Ascent. I use the blender cups a lot to grind spices and make dressings, and I'm considering the smoothie cups too. It's also VERY LOUD. You only need to run it for a short time, I rarely run mine for more than 40 seconds, but it is very very loud. Like using a power tool I'm your kitchen. A friend of mine has a little shelf in her mouth all in pantry, and she uses her blender in there so she can close the door (good if you get one with the preset programs).

However, if you want to drink it later, a protein green smoothie can be stored in the refrigerator for 24 hours. Store it in an airtight container, not your blender. Fill the container to the very top to keep any air out. Otherwise, the smoothie can pick up odors from nearby foods. If the smoothie separates, you can just give it a mix to blend everything back together. The colour of the smoothie might change as avocado oxidizes but it shouldn’t affect the flavour.


A Green Smoothie (that actually tastes good)

Yes, it&rsquos possible to have a green smoothie that tastes good.

I should probably preface this by saying if you&rsquore one of those hard core &ldquoI use a beet to sweeten my all-greens smoothie&rdquo kinds of people, then this might not appeal to you.

I&rsquom not that hard core with a green smoothie.

Like, not even close. I&rsquom a fruit smoothie girl who would rather roast her vegetables than drink them.

I recognize the value in blending vegetables, though, because I doubt I&rsquod sit and eat all of this plain. Especially for breakfast.

It&rsquos also a great meal replacement with some protein powder if you need to detox for a few days.

Last summer after I had finished nursing my baby, I wanted to do a juice/smoothie detox. Mostly because I&rsquod never done one, and I wanted to try it.

OK, that was only a small reason. It was because I was going to be in a wedding in a little over a week, and I wanted to loose some belly pooch. Dr. Oz&rsquos 3-day juice cleanse looked good, so I tried it.

(This is not an endorsement for Dr. Oz. He has some OK ideas sometimes, but he contradicts himself a LOT and gives horrible advice depending on who is sponsoring at the moment. Steve likes to watch it and pick all of his recommendations apart.)

So this smoothie was the &ldquolunch&rdquo smoothie from his cleanse, and it was my favorite out of the three.

I found it odd that I liked it so much considering this smoothie was the least popular among people online who had tried the cleanse.

I tweaked it slightly, and I make it to have for lunch every now and then. Especially if I&rsquove eaten a lot of rich food lately.

How to make a smoothie taste good

  1. Putting at least one frozen element in a smoothie dramatically improves the taste. I&rsquom not a room-temperature smoothie girl either. (See note above. I&rsquom not hard core.)
  2. Pineapple is pretty dang awesome in a smoothie. We&rsquove started using frozen pineapple to replace the frozen strawberries in our morning smoothies. (And replaced the carrot with more spinach and added almond milk) It sweetens really well, and it covers up a lot of the bitterness from greens, if you happen to be using kale.
  3. Adding an acidic element helps to brighten the flavors. Pineapple does a good job here, but a squirt of lime, a splash of pomegranate or orange juice would work, too!

Do the kids like it? Mostly.

A couple of the kids would still rather have a &ldquosmoothie store&rdquo smoothie than anything we make here, but will still drink it if it isn&rsquot green.

They also used to dip pieces of ham in maple-sweetened yogurt, so I wouldn&rsquot trust their judgment.

Foods that cause inflammation

The foods that cause inflammation won’t surprise you. Red meat, processed and preserved meats and sausage, dairy, gluten and white flours/starches, refined sugar, and preservatives top the list. A diet rich in these potent foods will most likely cause you to feel cruddy anyway. If you’re susceptible to inflammation, these things can make symptoms even worse.

What can you do? Consume a diet that is full of foods that fight inflammation is a good place to start.

Focus on foods that are very similar to a Mediterranean diet, making it super doable for most people in the western world. Heck, I can get all of these things at my local grocery store! It’s hard to make excuses when it’s accessible, right? Here’s the list to focus on:

  • tomatoes
  • olive oil
  • leafy greens + cruciferous veggies
  • fruit, berries + other low glycemic fruits
  • citrus – lemons and oranges
  • fish rich in omega-3 fatty acids – salmon, sardines, mackerel
  • ginger
  • garlic
  • turmeric

Certain seeds also have inflammation fighting properties – like chia, hemp and flax seed. The good news is, you can find them all right in my Protein Smoothie Boost, plus 10 g of protein!


Avocado Smoothie

Adding avocado to a smoothie might sound strange, but you’ll be surprised if you try it!

This secretly healthy avocado shake is so unbelievably creamy, it honestly tastes like drinking an actual vanilla milkshake.

I don’t know how that’s even possible, but seriously, it really does – try it for yourself and see!

With only 5 ingredients and less than a minute of prep time, the recipe is absolutely worth a try at least once, because it might just become your new go-to smoothie recipe.

Can You Taste The Avocado?

The avocado adds unbelievable thickness and creaminess, without any noticeable flavor whatsoever for most people. If you have super tastebuds, you might be able to tell it’s in there, but even then the flavor is only slight!

Can You Use Frozen Avocado?

Frozen or fresh avocado will both work. Just be sure to peel the avocados first. If you have a high-speed blender, try freezing your milk of choice in an ice cube tray and using that for the avocado drink instead of refrigerated milk. This is especially good with canned coconut milk, because it tastes like an avocado milkshake.

Can You Add Other Fruit?

You can! Fresh or frozen blueberries, cherries, strawberries, apple, cucumber, banana, or pineapple all go well with avocado.

Or turn it into a chocolate avocado smoothie by adding a spoonful of cocoa powder (I recommend dutch cocoa for a brownie-like flavor) and a little extra sweetener to counter the bitterness of the cocoa. You can also make an avocado protein shake by blending in a scoop of your favorite protein powder.

Vegan Avocado Smoothie:

Use your favorite nondairy milk. I like either canned coconut milk or almond cashew milk. Soy milk, amondmilk, and oat milk also work.

Keto Avocado Smoothie:

Avocados are naturally low in carbs. For a low carb smoothie, simply use the stevia option or your favorite sugar alternative for the sweetener of choice. Be sure to use a keto-friendly milk as well.

Avocado Health Benefits:

Besides the delicious creamy texture, you can also get so many added health benefits from avocados. They are cholesterol-free and contain nearly 20 vitamins, minerals, and phytonutrients, including potassium, folate, and B vitamins.

Just one serving of avocado provides eight percent of the daily value for fiber, and they have the least amount of sugar of any fruit. Over 75% of the fat in avocados is the unsaturated heart-healthy kind (good fats). Of course if you are on a doctor-ordered nutrition or weight loss plan, it’s always recommended to consult your doctor. For the general population, replacing some of the saturated fat in one’s diet with avocado can possibly help to reduce cholesterol, triglycerides, blood pressure, and inflammation.
