Il Posto Voted the Best Italian Restaurant in Denver

Il Posto Voted the Best Italian Restaurant in Denver

For our most-recent ranking, our panel of culinary experts chose Il Posto over Luca D’Italia as Denver‘s best Italian eatery

Denver’s Luca D’Italia took the #33 spot on our compilation, while Il Posto came in at #24.

What makes a great Italian restaurant? For some it may be the antipasti, while for others it’s the quality of the wines and pastas that’s the sure-fire test. Octopus? Lasagna? Cacio e pepe? Which one dish should be the barometer of a great Italian restaurant?

The steps we took to compile our most-recent ranking were as thorough and comprehensive as possible: we looked at restaurants that made it to our 101 Best Restaurants in America; we also recruited an illustrious panel of judges that included some of the country’s top food writers, critics, and bloggers to submit their suggestions, which we supplemented with our own choices, including previous years’ rankings as well as lauded newcomers. This list of hundreds of restaurants was then built into a survey that was sent out to more than 100 panelists, who voted for their favorites. The final ranking included a significant number of Italian restaurants, and to create this list we supplemented the Italian restaurants that made it into our final list of 101 with those that came in as runners-up and those that were featured on this year's list of the country's 50 best casual restaurants. Turns out there are many Italian restaurants worthy of renown in America, and two reside in Denver.

Il Posto means, “The Place” in Italian, and chef and owner Andrea Frizzi has largely backed up his contention that his breezy spot in City Park West is hot ― it’s routinely mentioned as one of the city’s best Italian restaurants for years now. Frizzi, originally from Milan, imports many Italian ingredients, incorporating them into a seasonal menu that changes on the chalkboard each day — “Cooking in the present,” he calls it. “It can be a rainy day, sunny and dry, or windy, or snowing — we as people react differently with the weather, so too with food.” Ah, Italians… poetry. And he may be right, but most don’t react differently to Frizzi’s food, especially his risotto, so don’t miss it.

Frizzi’s risotto (and everything else on his menu) is so good, it snagged the #24 spot on our roundup, beating out Luca D’Italia, who came in at #33. This means that – according to our experts – Il Posto is the best Italian restaurant in Denver.

Elder Greene Blues

Sous vide machines are staples of the modern restaurant kitchen and have found favor among adventurous home cooks. But they aren’t just for preparing food—they can also be used to produce flavorful cocktail ingredients, including syrups and infusions.

The Elder Greene Blues is an original creation from Adam Gamboa of Denver Italian restaurant Il Posto. Along with a couple standard additions, like Grand Marnier and fresh lime juice, the eye-catching drink features cucumber-basil-infused vodka and a basil syrup, both made with a sous vide machine. By cooking the infusion and syrup concurrently in sealed containers in a low-temperature water bath, Gamboa is able to extract more flavor out of each ingredient than he could by infusing them at room temperature.

Cucumber, basil and Fresno peppers imbue the vodka with a rich vegetal and herbal note, while the basil-infused simple syrup provides the cocktail with bright colors and another rich vein of basil flavor. Together they combine to create one of the freshest, most vibrant cocktails around.

Using a sous vide machine to make a cocktail may seem complicated, but the devices are actually quite easy to use—and they take a lot of the guesswork out of cooking by dialing in the exact temperature you want. You’ll feel like a chef mixing this drink. And the best part is that you’re making large batches of infused vodka and basil syrup. So while it takes some prep work to make your ingredients, you’ll have plenty of leftovers on hand to make another round of drinks—or to experiment with other cocktails.

Where To Eat

Il Posto
After nine years at a different location in town, this icon of Italian cuisine reopened in 2017 right in the heart of RiNo, acting as a vote of confidence for the neighborhood’s culinary potential. Chef/owner Andrea Frizzi made sure to keep with the area’s artistic roots—the impressive marble bar is from the same quarry as Michaelangelo’s David, and the largest Bocci chandelier in the world illuminates the space.

The Populist
The menu here is globally-influenced and locally-sourced—it consistently tops local critics’ hit lists. Mouthwatering snacks including salt and vinegar popcorn, burrata with gooseberries, and a potato rosti with sweet corn, peach, and chamomile pistou. It’s hard to go wrong here, especially if you opt for the seven-course testing menu, which at just $50 per person comes at a steal.

Work & Class
James Beard Award semifinalist Dana Rodriguez has generated national buzz for her unique blend of American and Latin flavors. Make sure to try the “peppers five ways”—bacon-wrapped jalapeños with candied almonds, Fresno peppers, grilled shishitos, mixed pickled peppers, and pepper jam.

Julep
This local favorite offers up “sophisticated southern” favorites like fried oysters, pimento pecan cheese balls, deviled snails, and killer buttermilk biscuits served with raw local honey. Dinner here is foolproof, but things really heat up around brunch—order the crab Benedict and a Pimm’s Cup, and you’re in for a proper RiNo experience.

BNE’s Best Italian Restaurants

Ok, so you might have missed out on a European summer this year, but that doesn’t mean that you have to miss out on the tastes of Italy. Brisbane is home to some of Australia’s best Italian restaurants, and as the days get warmer, it’s time to start making the most of them (and their cocktail menus!).

We asked our readers to share their top picks for Italian cuisine in Brisbane, and your responses did not disappoint. From Naples to Florence, we’ve rounded up your favourite Italian eateries in Brisbane. Put your passport away and grab your pals, your favourite sunglasses and a flirty dress, because this is your one-way ticket to the land of red wine, delicious carbs and good times! And, if your our city’s resident Italian cuisine expert who’s had it all, try the new kid on the block, Uh Oh Spaghettio!

1889 Enoteca | Woolloongabba

Take a trip down memory lane to 1889 Enoteca – the Woolloongabba restaurant that’s been serving up sophisticated Italian fare for almost 12 years. Located in the heritage-listed Moreton Rubber Works building, the restaurant features cosy booths and exposed brick and wooden floors, which evoke the feel of an old-school Roman villa. Despite its rustic appearance, patrons can expect a fine-dining experience that honours traditional Italian recipes and uses only the highest quality local and imported ingredients. Wine buffs are also in luck – ‘enoteca’ means wine library in Italian, and the restaurant certainly lives up to its namesake with an unbeatable wine menu of imported and regional varietals.

Restaurant Award Winners that Have Permanently Closed During the COVID-19 Pandemic

Restaurants are inherently risky businesses, and this year the coronavirus pandemic has had a terrible impact on the industry. Despite their enormous efforts, some of our award-winning restaurants—from long-honored classics to exciting newcomers—have been forced to close their doors for good.

As of May 17, 2021, 124 Restaurant Award winners have closed.

Wine Spectator is grateful for their involvement in our Restaurant Awards program and their dedication to building exceptional wine lists. We look forward with anticipation to learning about new paths and new ventures from these businesses and wine professionals.

Chef Anna Klinger and husband Emiliano Coppa opened the Venetian-inspired Al di Là on Park Slope’s Fifth Avenue in 1998, at a time when most Manhattanites weren't especially interested in heading into Brooklyn for dinner. But by the time then-New York Times critic Frank Bruni gave the trattoria two stars in 2006, it was widely regarded as the neighborhood’s best restaurant, and helped to transform the dining scene on the now-thriving avenue. Klinger’s menu of home-style appetizers, pastas and braised and grilled meats rarely changes, but that's fine with us. Try the tagliatelle al ragu and charcoal-grilled young chicken.

Denver is lucky to be the last stop for Tim Kuklinski. A peripatetic childhood took him back and forth across the country.

Who: Katsumi Yuso Ruiz and Stephen Julia of Cure All Bitters

The Lowdown: Taking over most of the street-side wall of Central is Curio. The swanky cocktail bar comes from Ruiz and Julia, another husband-and-wife duo. Ruiz, who began as a small-batch bitters maker in Mexico City, will showcase her craft cocktail skills through a menu filled with classic cocktails ($8-9) from Old Fashioneds and Manhattans to Curio cocktails ($9-10) — including the Spring Shrink made with Cabez tequila, ginger, syrup, lemon juice and spiced and molé house bitters. Curio also offers fourteen wines (by the glass and bottle, $7-40) and local beers on draft ($4-7). There is also a selection of non-alcoholic mocktails and sodas ($2-6) and brunch cocktails ($8-11) such as mimosas for the weekend morning crowd. Happy Hour is Monday through Friday 3 to 6 p.m. and you can get a $5 glass of wine, $6 classic cocktail or a Genesee Cream Ale for $3.

Must-Try: The Bourbon on the Rose ($10) made with Buffalo Trace, Capelletti, lemon juice, syrup, and root beer house bitters
