My recipe for healthy, spicy Hawaiian burger. It's simple to make and tastes great, the pineapple goes very well with the spicy kick and provides a great flavour combination. They hold their shape well so can be grilled or BBQ'd for a healthier option. I like my burgers quite spicy, so these have a little kick, but feel free to experiment and omit any ingredients you don't like, and indeed include any that you do to the burger mix. To keep things healthier I don't add mayonnaise or relish, I find that the pineapple is a great fruity and juicy substitute to keep things healthier.

- 250g extra lean minced beef
- 1 small red onion, chopped
- 3 mushrooms, finely chopped
- 1/2 pepper, chopped
- 1 teaspoon dried chilli flakes
- 1 tablespoon chopped jalepenos, or to taste
- 1 pinch salt
- 1 pinch black pepper
- 1 slice wholemeal bread, finely chopped
- 1 egg
- To serve
- wholemeal burger buns
- mozzarella cheese
- tinned pineapple slices
- green salad

- Add a little oil to a frying pan and add the chopped onions and mushrooms; fry until slightly browned.
- In a large bowl, combine the onion and mushroom mixture with all of the other burger ingredients and mix well. Divide the mixture into four, and a roll each portion into a small ball, then flatten and round the edges into a burger shape.
- Place burgers under a hot grill to cook to preference. Once cooked, the mozzarella can be placed on top and melted under the grill for a further minute.
- Place each burger into a wholemeal burger bun and garnish with pineapple and salad to taste.
The chips served with this are made from two medium sized potatoes. They are sliced thinly in their skins, and sprinkled with chilli powder and paprika. They are then placed on a roasting tray, a little FryLight® is sprayed on the tray and chips, and they are then roasted in the oven at 180 C / Gas 4 for about 20 minutes (stir occasionally to allow for even cooking and browning on all sides), or until golden brown.

Grilled Hawaiian Chicken Sandwiches
Grilled Hawaiian Chicken Sandwiches will quickly become your new favorite chicken sandwich and are packed with a homemade pineapple barbecue sauce, juicy grilled chicken, grilled pineapple, red onions, and more! This sandwich is everything, it's seriously delicious. I mean it's got grilled chicken and pineapple all in a quick and easy barbecue sauce flavored with pineapple juice, garlic, ginger, and Sriracha if you like things spicy. Plus it couldn't be easier to make. The sauce takes all of 5 minutes to put together and the chicken takes about 10 minutes on the grill. That's it to have the most amazing grilled chicken sandwiches.
If this recipe looks kind of familiar, it's based off this Grilled Pineapple Barbecue Chicken. We love that meal so much, I have been making it on repeat and to switch things up one night, we made sandwiches instead and they were so good I had to share them. I have also made that recipe with pork chops after a reader suggested it and they came out amazing as well. I think the moral of the story is that anything tastes delicious with this doctored up barbecue sauce and grilled pineapple.
Another quick note, I got a few questions asking if it is really necessary to grill the pineapple. While you could skip this step, I really recommend taking the extra step and grilling it. The pineapple caramelizes on the outside and gets a nice smoky flavor from the grill that really adds something to the dish. It doesn't really take any extra time either since you will already be cooking the chicken.
Healthy spicy Hawaiian burgers recipe - Recipes
First of all, sorry for my absence - my little sister got married this past weekend and I intended to have some posts scheduled but with the travelling, last minute wedding details and all the fun we had in Texas, it just didn't happen. But I'm back and I've got some great recipes to share with you coming up.
I've been eyeing the fresh pineapple every time I walked through the produce department for a couple of weeks. Finally I decided to buy one. I have to admit, I have never bought a fresh pineapple before thinking it would be way too much work to cut up. If I bought it fresh, I would buy the already cored and cleaned pineapple for way too much money that comes in a little plastic cup. But that means I over paid by about 5 times. For something that is really very easy. So if you have this same trepidation about purchasing a whole fresh pineapple, check back tomorrow for a how-to post and learn just how simple it is. If you want to, you could also use canned pineapple to make these burgers, but fresh pineapple grilled better and make sure you buy the pineapple in its own juice not heavy syrup.
For now, let's talk about these burgers. These were absolutely delicious. I had a chicken sandwich at a restaurant once (although I cannot remember what restaurant) that had pineapple, pepper jack cheese, BBQ sauce and chicken breast. I wasn't a big fan of the BBQ sauce, but I loved the combination of spicy cheese and sweet pineapple. I had some ground chicken breast at home and since I had finally decided to buy the fresh pineapple, I decided to make my own version. I think the pineapple is juicy enough and as long as you don't overcook your burger, the sauce is unnecessary but if you wanted to add something, a little chipotle mayo would be my recommendation. I would also throw a couple slices of red onion on these next time but I didn't have any on hand this time. As you can see in the pictures, I served these burgers with some chipotle corn on the cob that was a great match, so check back for that recipe later this week.
Spicy Hawaiian Burgers
2 pounds ground chicken
6 pineapple rings (or equivalent slices, cut about 1/2" - 3/4" thick)
6 slices pepper jack cheese
6 whole wheat hamburger buns
1/4 cup low-sodium soy sauce
1 tsp smoked paprika
1 tsp chili powder
1/2 tsp seasoning salt (I use Lawry's)
1/2 tsp ground cumin
1 clove garlic, minced
Combine the ground chicken, soy sauce, 1/2 the paprika, 1/2 the chili powder, seasoning salt, cumin, and garlic. Lightly mix with your hands and divide into 6 even balls. Form patties, making them slightly thinner in the middle and sprinkle with remaining paprika and chili powder. Refrigerate about 30 minutes.
Preheat the grill to medium heat. Coat grates lightly with oil. Grill burgers over medium heat about 6 minutes per side. The burgers should flip easily when they are ready to turn, if they want to stick, give them another minute. Top with cheese for the last 1-2 minutes of cooking time to melt. Remove to a plate and cover with aluminum foil to rest. Grill buns if desired.
For the pineapple, if you are using rings, grill directly on the grates over medium heat. Carefully turn after 1-2 minutes. If you are using pineapple slices or chunks, thread onto skewers and grill skewers in the same fashion. Assemble burgers and enjoy.
Grilled Hawaiian Teriyaki Burger
This easy Hawaiian teriyaki burger is made with lean ground beef, carrots, scallions and topped with grilled pineapple and a homemade pineapple teriyaki sauce.
This burger was inspired by a trip to Disney World with my husband and youngest daughter Madison. We stayed at the Grand Floridian Resort which was a lovely place to stay. One of those nights we ate dinner at the Kona Cafe at Disney’s Polynesian Resort, where I had a delicious teriyaki steak topped with pineapple which was the inspiration for this burger recipe.
The homemade pineapple teriyaki sauce is delicious, but if you wish you can use pre-made teriyaki marinade to speed this up. Canned pineapple can also be used instead of fresh, just be sure it’s packed in juice and not syrup.
To lower the carbs, swap the bun out for a bed of lettuce and drizzle the teriyaki sauce on top.

The weather has been up and down with sunshine and gloom. I planned to cook all day yesterday, but it ended up being too cloudy to take good pictures. I love natural light since I don’t have any real photo editing program. I should probably get some kind of program since sometimes there just isn’t good natural light. A blogger friend suggested PicMonkey, which I messed around a bit on yesterday and really liked! Any other suggestions of (free) options??
On one of the sunny days, I was able to fire up the grill and make some burgers. My parents were kind enough to give me some of their grass-fed cow share! I’ve been loving using the meat because it is so lean but so flavorful. BTW I want to give another shoutout to my parents who are celebrating their 30th Anniversary today! Thirty years. Wow. Since I haven’t even been alive 30 years, I can’t imagine being married 30 years. It is definitely an impressive feat.
Ok back to the burgers. I love how the white pepper gives the pineapple glaze a nice bite while still pairing with the spicy relish! This relish would be awesome with some applegate hotdogs and tessemae’s ketchup! I can’t wait for summer when these Hawaiian burgers will be a staple in my weekly meals!

Here’s something I learned recently: Did you know that you can place a can of baked beans right on the grill? Tony taught me this trick and I was thoroughly impressed. All you have to do is open the can, remove the label, then place on the grill until bubbly hot. Easy and no pans required!

I actually love frozen veggie burgers, and I have experimented with several homemade veggie burger recipes, but I have never found one that stood out. It&rsquos hard to get the texture and consistency right, and often times they end up falling apart. Making these burgers was incredibly easy and they were by far the most delicious burger I have ever consumed. They did turn out a bit spicy, so if you don&rsquot like a lot of spice, I would suggest scaling back on the spice a bit&hellipfor my family, they were spot on! After I made the black bean burgers, I topped them with two delicious slices of Swiss cheese, grilled pineapple slices, crispy onion rings, and Honey BBQ sauce. We could not get our hands on these fast enough!
These Spicy Black Bean Hawaiian BBQ Burgers will be a hit at your next BBQ, and even the meat eaters will be asking for this recipe!
- 1/2 onion , chopped
- 1 jalapeno , seeded and chopped
- 3 garlic cloves
- 14.5 ounces black beans , rinsed and drained (I used canned, but you can also use cooked dry beans as well)
- 1/2 cup rolled oats
- 1/2 cup corn , at room temperature (frozen or fresh is fine)
- 1 green onion , chopped
- 2 tsp cumin
- 1/2 tsp curry powder
- 1/4 tsp cayenne pepper
- 1/4 cup breadcrumbs , plain
- salt and pepper
- 3 TBS vegetable or coconut oil
- Pineapple slices (about 12 slices for 4 burgers), grilled
- 12 onion rings
- Honey BBQ sauce
- Swiss Cheese Slices
- 4 Ciabatta rolls , lightly toasted and cut in half
Put onion, jalapeno and garlic into a food processor and pulse for a few seconds. Add beans, oats, corn, green onion, cumin, curry powder, and cayenne pepper. Season with salt and pepper and pulse for about 20 seconds or until fully mixed. Scrape downs sides of the bowl and process for 10 seconds.
Place mixture into a bowl, cover, and refrigerate for at least two hours.
Remove chilled mixture from refrigerator and stir in breadcrumbs. Adjust seasonings to taste.
Pour oil into a skillet and place over medium heat. Form mixture into four equal patties (using a 1/2 cup measuring cup works well). Cook for 5 to 7 minutes on each side or until a crust develops and the patties are heated through.
Place bottom of roll on plate and add 1 slice of swiss cheese on top. Then add a spicy black bean burger patty, a smear of honey BBQ sauce, another slice of cheese, 3 pineapples slices, 3 onion rings, and about 2 TBS of honey BBQ sauce (more or less if desired). Place top of roll on the top of the burger.
Serve with lots of napkins and additional sides if desired.
