Michelle Obama urges readers to nutrition guidance from healthcare professionals, not politicians.
This week, first lady Michelle Obama wrote an op-ed in The New York Times in response to recent initiatives by members of Congress to push back important nutrition reforms and measures against childhood obesity.
Obama, whose Let’s Move initiative has set the stage for greater nutritional awareness across the country, has led to changes like improved school lunches in 90 percent of schools and greater restrictions on the way that junk food companies target young consumers.
As a result of these and similar movements, obesity rates in young children have finally begun to drop for the first time in a decade.
“We know that when we rely on sound science, we can actually begin to turn the tide on childhood obesity,” writes the First Lady.
Yet, instead of further developing these beneficial programs, there are members of the House of Representatives working to roll them back. “They want to make it optional, not mandatory, for schools to serve fruits and vegetables to our kids.”
It wasn’t that long ago, Obama reminds us, that Congress decided to count tomato sauce on a slice of pizza as a vegetable. “You don’t have to be a nutritionist to know that this doesn’t make much sense,” says the First Lady.
In conclusion, Michelle Obama implores readers to turn to the experts, not elected officials, for nutritional guidance: “When we make decisions about our kids’ health, we rely on doctors and experts who can give us accurate information based on sound science. Our leaders in Washington should do the same.”

Washington, DC, April 26, 2011 – Today, Agriculture Secretary Vilsack announced the start of the judging period in First Lady Michelle Obama's Recipes for Healthy Kids competition. A judging team led by Audrey Rowe, Administrator of USDA's Food and Nutrition Service visited a local school in Greeley today, kicking off visits to 15 semi-finalist schools around the nation. USDA and the First Lady launched the Recipes for Healthy Kids competition last September, challenging teams of school nutrition professionals, chefs, students, and community members to develop creative, nutritious, and kid-approved recipes that schools can easily incorporate into National School Lunch Program menus.
"Recipes for Healthy Kids draws on America's culinary creativity and expertise to improve school meals with kid-inspired recipes," said Agriculture Secretary Vilsack. "With many children consuming as many as half their daily calories at school, creating healthy meals is an important step in the Obama administration's effort to combat childhood obesity and improve the health and wellbeing of all our kids."
In accordance with the Recipes for Healthy Kids competition rules and judging criteria, the Food Nutrition Service (FNS) and American Culinary Federation (ACF) teams have determined the top five recipes in each of the three competition categories from among the 340 recipes that were received by the submission deadline. Fifteen recipes were chosen to move forward in the competition from schools in 11 states. From among the entries submitted, five were selected in each of three categories: whole grains, dark green and orange vegetables, and dry beans and peas. Recipes will be judged on student involvement, nutrition, creativity and originality, ease of use in schools, and recipe presentation.

Schools that entered the top five recipes in each category will also be visited onsite by a judging team of a USDA official, an American Culinary Federation chef, and a school nutrition professional to help determine the three finalists (one from each category) that will participate in a national cook-off event this summer. The recipes will also be posted on the Recipes for Healthy Kids website for voting for the Popular Choice award, which will close May 31.
There will be a grand prize chosen by the judging panel as well as a Popular Choice winner based on public voting. To recognize and share the culinary creativity nationwide, the top ten recipes in each category will be published in a Recipes for Healthy Kids Cookbook to share with students and families.
USDA's Food and Nutrition Service oversees the administration of 15 nutrition assistance programs, including the child nutrition programs. Improving child nutrition is also a focal point of the Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act that was signed in to law by President Obama in December 2010. This legislation authorizes USDA's child nutrition programs, including the Summer Food Service Program and the National School Lunch Program, which serves nearly 32 million children each day. It will allow USDA, for the first time in over 30 years, the chance to make real reforms to the school lunch and breakfast programs by improving the critical nutrition and hunger safety net for millions of children. As reported by CNN through Rafael Romo, he said that a person familiar with Melania’s activities said that photographers captured images of “rugs and other items in the Residence and the East Wing.” But Melania has yet to speak out about the chaos and deaths left by the protests.
It should be noted that this information has not yet been confirmed. It was last Wednesday, Republican protesters took over the United States Capitol, preventing the Democrat Joe Biden from being given power.
These disturbances caused the security elements of the building to begin to evacuate all the personnel, forcing a temporary suspension of the session where the electoral votes were debated.
In this event the victory of Joe Biden, over Donald Trump, was to be officially promulgated, making him the new president of the United States.
“Photos of rugs and other items were being taken in the Executive Residence and the East Wing,” mentioned a source close to the outlet, where he also said that Melania was supervising the project.
Other media claim that indeed, this was done at the same time as the invasion of the Capitol by Republican protesters, where there were several arrests and even some deaths were recorded.

9 Steps to Reverse Dementia and Memory Loss as You Age
RECENTLY, I SPOKE on a panel for PBS TV at the American Association of Retired Persons (AARP) convention in Boston. The topic was dementia.
There was a woman with mild cognitive impairment on the panel. Her condition is sort of like pre-Alzheimer’s disease. Everyone on the panel — including the Harvard neurologist — agreed that memory loss is NOT a normal part of aging. The sad part was that the panel didn’t have much to offer people in the way of prevention. Their only solution was just a very bad and pretty ineffective selection of drugs with lots of side effects.
But there is another way to think about brain aging. The brain responds to all the same insults as the rest of the body — stress, poor diet, toxins, lack of exercise or sleep, nutritional deficiencies, and more. All we have to do is give the brain a tune-up and we can see miracles. In today’s blog I will give you nine tips that will allow you to do that. But first, let’s look a little more closely at the magnitude of this problem.
Dementia on the Rise
Dementia is a big problem and growing every day. Ten percent of 65-year olds, 25 percent of 75-year olds, and 50 percent of 85-year olds will get Alzheimer’s disease — at a cost of $60 billion a year to society. Worse, the number of people with Alzheimer’s is predicted to triple in the next few decades. It is now the seventh leading cause of death.(i)
I believe this is preventable, that we can slow this trend and even reverse it. In a moment, I will tell you how. But first I want to explain why just naming a disease — whether it is dementia or anything else — is becoming increasingly unhelpful (unless you just want to match the drug to the disease which is the only thing doctors are trained to do).
We have to think about individuals, not diseases. In medicine, our genetic differences are more important than our similarities.
Sometimes the practice of medicine lags behind the science, and sometimes the practice gets ahead of the science. Genetic testing puts us squarely in the middle of that dilemma. We are at a crossroads, where the old ideas we have about disease and diagnosis become less meaningful as we understand more and more about the importance of individual differences in determining illness. This is a time when personalized medicine will replace medicine based on diagnosis and disease.
We once thought that heart disease and artery-clogging plaques couldn’t be reversed (and now have proof that this does happen), I believe dementia can be reversed…
In fact, disease and diagnosis as we know it will soon be an obsolete concept, an artifact of medical history, like bloodletting or phrenology (the art of diagnosis based on the shape of your skull, popular in the 19th century). The reason is simply this: Naming a disease does nothing to help us identify and treat the underlying causes of the disease. We must address these causes if we have any hope of helping individuals heal.
I’d like to illustrate this through the story of one of my patients who had a diagnosis of dementia.
Treating Individuals, Not Diseases
George and his wife came to see me because he could no longer manage his business affairs, had become increasingly unable to function at home, and had to withdraw from family and social relationships. He was desperate as he felt himself slipping away.
There is no effective known treatment for dementia. But we do know a lot about what affects brain function and brain aging: our nutrition, inflammation, environmental toxins, stress, exercise, and deficiencies of hormones, vitamins, and omega-3 fats.
It is not just one gene, but the interaction between many genes and the environment that puts someone at risk for a chronic disease such as dementia. And we know that many things affect how our genes function — our diet, vitamins and minerals, toxins, allergens, stress, lack of sleep and exercise, and more.
Even though no long-term studies have been done to look at treating dementia based on genes, there are so many scientific threads that weave together a picture of how and why our brains age and what genes are involved. This leads me back to George …
For this man, whose mind and life were evaporating, I looked deeply into his genes and the biochemistry his genes controlled and found places where we could improve things.
He had a gene called apo E4, which is a high-risk gene for Alzheimer’s disease(ii) and also made it hard for him to lower his cholesterol and detoxify mercury from his brain.(iii) He also had a version of a gene for detoxification of metals and other toxins (glutathione-S-transferase, or GST)(iv) that was very inefficient, making him accumulate more toxins over his lifetime. Having the combination of a problem with GST and apo E4 puts people at even more risk for dementia.(v),(vi) In another study, people with an absent GST gene were likely to have much higher levels of mercury.(vii)
George had another gene called MTHFR(viii) that made him require very high doses of folate to lower his blood levels of homocysteine, which is a substance very toxic to the brain. Lastly, he had a gene called CETP that caused his cholesterol to be high, which contributes to dementia. Combine this gene with the apo E4 gene and your risk of dementia goes way up.(ix)
We found that George had high levels of mercury(x) and helped him detoxify with foods such as kale, watercress, and cilantro, herbs such as milk thistle, nutrients such as selenium and zinc, and medications that helped him overcome his genetic difficulties by getting rid of toxins.
We lowered his cholesterol with diet and herbs. We lowered his homocysteine with high doses of folate and vitamins B6 and B12.
What happened then was impressive …
After a year of aggressive therapy that was matched to his genes, not his diagnosis, he had a remarkable and dramatic recovery. Before I saw him, he could not manage his business, nor did his grandchildren want to be around him. After matching his treatment to his genes, he was again able to function, and his grandchildren loved being with him again.
While this area of genetic testing and nutrigenomics is new, and more research is needed to help us refine our understanding and treatment, there are ways to look through new doors into an entirely new era of medicine that no longer focuses on the disease, but on the person and their uniqueness. Here’s another example of how we can do that.
A woman named Christine was eighty and was experiencing severe memory loss and cognitive decline. Her family was obviously concerned, so she was tested with hours of neuropsychological testing and found to have dementia.
Her neurologist offered her words of comfort, but told her and her family there is no treatment truly effective to stop or reverse the progression of dementia. That’s when her daughter brought her to see me.
We discovered many subtle changes in her health that on their own wouldn’t explain dementia, but when added all together put a strain on her brain function. All we did was correct those problems — low thyroid function, mercury toxicity, inflammation, and deficiencies in vitamins B6 and D, folate, coenzyme Q10, and omega-3 fats — and improved her diet overall. I encouraged her to exercise, because exercise can help improve cognitive function and prevent dementia.
Six months later, she had the extensive memory tests repeated. Her psychologist was surprised to report that her scores got BETTER!
To put this in perspective, mental decline happens progressively, sometimes quickly, sometimes slowly, but NEVER gets better — according to our traditional medical thinking.
But just like we once thought that heart disease and artery-clogging plaques couldn’t be reversed (and now have proof that this does happen), I believe dementia can be reversed (if caught early enough) by attending to all the factors that affect brain function – diet, exercise, stress, nutritional deficiencies, toxins, hormonal imbalances, inflammation, and more.
It is really quite simple. Like everything I describe in UltraWellness, you get rid of the bad stuff, put in the good stuff, and the body heals. It’s common sense, but we are so far from that in the way we treat chronic illness with conventional medicine.

First lady's Let's Move! obesity campaign prompts changes
WASHINGTON Wal-Mart is putting special labels on some store-brand products to help shoppers quickly spot healthier items. Millions of schoolchildren are helping themselves to vegetables from salad bars in their lunchrooms, while kids' meals at Olive Garden and Red Lobster restaurants automatically come with a side of fruit or vegetables and a glass of low-fat milk.
The changes put in place by the food industry are in response to the campaign against childhood obesity that Michelle Obama began waging three years ago. More changes are in store.
Influencing policy posed more of a challenge for the first lady, and not everyone welcomed her effort, criticizing it as a case of unwanted government intrusion.
Still, nutrition advocates and others give her credit for using her clout to help bring a range of interests to the table. They hope the increased awareness she has generated through speeches, her garden and her physical exploits will translate into further reductions in childhood obesity rates long after she leaves the White House.
About one-third of U.S. children are overweight or obese, which puts them at increased risk for any number of life-threatening illnesses, including diabetes, high blood pressure and heart disease.
While there is evidence of modest declines in childhood obesity rates in some parts of the country, the changes are due largely to steps taken before the first lady launched "Let's Move" in February 2010.
With the program entering its fourth year, Mrs. Obama embarked Wednesday on a two-day promotional tour with stops in Mississippi, Illinois and Missouri. She has been talking up the program on daytime and late-night TV shows, on the radio and in public service announcements with Big Bird. She also plans discussions next week on Google and Twitter.
"We're starting to see some shifts in the trend lines and the data where we're starting to show some improvement," the first lady told SiriusXM host B. Smith in an interview broadcast Tuesday. "We've been spending a lot of time educating and re-educating families and kids on how to eat, what to eat, how much exercise to get and how to do it in a way that doesn't completely disrupt someone's life."
Larry Soler, president and chief executive of the Partnership for a Healthier America, said Mrs. Obama has "been the leader in making the case for the time is now in childhood obesity and everyone has a role to play in overcoming the problem." The nonpartisan, nonprofit partnership was created as part of "Let's Move" to work with the private sector and to hold companies accountable for changes they promised to make.
Conservatives accused Mrs. Obama of going too far and dictating what people should - and shouldn't - eat after she played a major behind-the-scenes role in the passage in 2010 of a child nutrition law that required schools to make foods healthier. Former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin, the Republican Party's vice presidential nominee in 2008, once brought cookies to a school and called the first lady's efforts a "nanny state run amok."
Other leaders in the effort, such as New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg, have felt the backlash, too. Last fall, Bloomberg helped enact the nation's first rule barring restaurants, cafeterias and concession stands from selling soda and other high-calorie drinks in containers larger than 16 ounces.
Despite the criticism, broad public support exists for some of the changes the first lady and the mayor are advocating, according to a recent Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research poll.
More than eight in 10 of those surveyed, 84 percent, support requiring more physical activity in schools, and 83 percent favor government providing people with nutritional guidelines and information about diet and exercise. Seventy percent favor having restaurants put calorie counts on menus, and 75 percent consider overweightness and obesity a serious problem in this country, according to the Nov. 21-Dec. 14 survey by telephone of 1,011 adults.
Food industry representatives say Mrs. Obama has influenced their own efforts.
Mary Sophos of the Grocery Manufacturers Association, which represents the country's largest food companies, including General Mills and Kellogg's, said an industry effort to label the fronts of food packages with nutritional content gained momentum after Mrs. Obama, a mother of two, attended one of their meetings in 2010 and encouraged them to do more.
"She's not trying to point fingers," Sophos said. "She's trying to get people to focus on solutions."
A move by the companies signaling willingness to work with Mrs. Obama appears to have paid off as the Obama administration eased off some of the fights it appeared ready to pick four years ago.
The Food and Drug Administration has stalled its push to mandate labeling on the front of food packages, saying it is monitoring the industry's own effort. A rule that would require calorie counts on menus has been delayed as the FDA tries to figure out whom to apply it to. Supermarkets, movie theaters and other retailers have been lobbying to be exempted.
The industry also appears to have successfully warded off a move by the Federal Trade Commission to put in place voluntary guidelines for advertising junk food to kids. Directed by Congress, the guidelines would have discouraged the marketing of certain foods that didn't meet government-devised nutritional requirements. The administration released draft guidelines in 2011 but didn't follow up after the industry said they went too far and angry House Republicans summoned an agency official to Capitol Hill to defend them.
Besides labeling its store brands, Wal-Mart, the world's largest retailer, also pledged to cut sodium and added sugars by 25 percent and 10 percent, respectively, by 2015, and remove industrially produced trans fats.
Leslie Dach, an executive vice president, said sodium in packaged bread has been cut by 13 percent, and added sugar in refrigerated flavored milk, popular among kids, has been cut by more than 17 percent. He said Wal-Mart shoppers have told the company that eating healthier is important to them. Giving customers what they want is also good for business.
New York reported a 5.5 percent decline in obesity rates in kindergarteners through eighth-graders between the 2006-07 and 2010-11 school years, according a report last fall by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, which studies health policy. In Philadelphia, the decline was 4.7 percent among students in grades K-12 between the 2006-07 and 2009-10 school years, the foundation said.
Declines also were reported in California and in Mississippi, where Mrs. Obama stops Wednesday.
In Philadelphia, an organization called the Food Trust has worked since 1992 to help corner stores offer fresh foods, connect schools with local farms, bring supermarkets to underserved areas and ensure that farmers' markets accept food stamps, according to Robert Wood Johnson.
New York City requires chain restaurants to post calorie information on menus. Licensed day care centers also must offer daily physical activity, limit the amount of time children spend in front of TV and computer screens, and set nutrition standards.

Alright, does anyone have these little insects crawling around their home right now? I do, I took the picture below earlier today.
One might think that these are cute little ladybugs, but with a closer look, they will see that they are actually Asian lady beetles.
Asian lady beetles are quite different then ladybugs and can quickly invade a home if they are not dealt with quickly.
How Can I tell if these are ladybugs or lady beetles?
Here are a few signs that you actually have Asian lady beetles instead of ladybugs.
- The color of the lady beetles shell is a brownish orange and younger ones can be a bit red in color. They are usually not the vivid red color of a ladybug.
- Lady beetles have a scent, and smell. When they fear danger, they let off this strong scent to warn other lady beetles that danger is near.
- Lady beetles multiply quickly. If you notice several quickly appearing in your home, it is most likely lady beetles.
- Lady beetles hibernate in the winter usually in the walls of homes. In very early spring (still very cold outside, in my case below freezing), they start to wake up and make their way indoors to stay alive.
- Ladybugs die off in the fall and lady beetles hibernate. If it is still really cold outside (Below 50ºF) and you are seeing insects that look like ladybugs, you most likely have lady beetles and not ladybugs in the home.
These are just a few ways to figure out which insect is in your home.

Getting rid of lady beetles can be somewhat challenging. Here are 10 natural ways to help you get rid of ladybugs AKA Asian lady beetles in your home.
1. Winterize Your Home – Lady beetles come in to the house most likely in the fall or even closer to winter. They then hibernate and when it starts to warm up in the spring they come out of hibernation and work their way into the homes to stay alive. In the fall, they will often find a place in the walls to sleep for the winter. By winterizing your home, be sure to seal your doors and windows. Caulk the windows, replace weather stripping if needed and make it hard for any creatures to essentially get into your home.
2. Act Fast – One of the most important things you can do when you notice these bugs in your home is to act fast. These bugs can quickly multiply! They are really good at communicating with one another with their scent and this quickly attracts more into your home. Act fast to get rid of them before the problem gets out of hand!
3. Choose A Dark Colored Home – Lady beetles are attracted to lightly painted homes. If you really have a problem, consider changing the paint on your home to a darker color. This will help keep them out of your home.
4. Start gardening – Lady beetles are great for your garden! They eat aphids, a little bug that can really harm your garden. Welcome lady beetles into your garden, they can really be beneficial!
5. Plant Mums – Lady beetles do not like mums. Be proactive and plant mums around the windows and around the entrance of the house. Did you know that mums are a key ingredient in flea powder as well. Protect your home from all kinds of insects with mums!
6. Vacuum Them Up – Using your attachment tools on your vacuum, vacuum up these lady beetles. Most of the lady beetles will survive being vacuumed up. If you prefer to get rid of them all together, place the vacuum bag into a sealed plastic bag or you can burn the bag that they are in.
7. Use Diatomaceous Earth Powder – Diatomaceous Earth Powder can be spread around the base of your home. This will not only help prevent lady beetles from entering the home at ground level, but it will also help deter other creatures as well.

I personally am trying what is called a hedge apple, sometimes called Osage oranges. They grow in south western Arkansas and the Osage Indians used them for an antibacterial medicine. They say it’s good for keeping spiders & crickets away. Hopefully will work on stink bugs & Asian beetles too
O.k. ladies, I have found the solution to rid your home of Asian beetles! Those lemon candles, etc. get expensive very fast. My Orkin exterminator couldn’t kill em & who has the time or hose long enough to reach a ceiling? After hours of research, I finally found what kills these pesky beetles & all other pests, including wasps! It’s called “Martin’s VIPER”! Buy the CONCENTRATE on the Internet, not the watered down version from Lowes. Spray outside door/window frames. I fired my exterminator after I found this stuff.

Michelle Obama unveils food label proposals: 'This will be the new norm'
Michelle Obama has some bad news for weight-conscious shoppers and food manufacturers: we’ve all been cheating.
In a rare foray into a frontline political battlefield, the first lady on Thursday announced a series of proposed changes to US food labelling rules that seek to tackle the fact that the average serving sizes used to calculate calorie intake have lost track with the reality of modern American appetites.
“This will be the new norm for providing consumers with the information they need,” said the First Lady.
“We first launched Let’s Move four years ago, [and] all of us here today were driven by a simple belief: that parents deserve to have the information they need to make healthy choices for their kids,” she added.
“This isn’t a particularly radical idea in fact, it seems pretty obvious. But the truth is that too often, it’s nearly impossible to get the most basic facts about the food we buy for our families.”
If the alterations are adopted, drinks companies, for example, would no longer be able to treat a 20oz bottle of soda as containing 2.5 servings of 8oz each for the purpose of labelling estimated calorie levels. Instead, both 12oz cans and 20oz bottles would each have to be treated as a single serving, and the calorie estimate displayed prominently on the label will increase by 50% or 150% accordingly.
In total, the new changes proposed will affect 27 of the 157 product categories governed by portion rules.
In some categories, serving sizes will go down. Average consumption levels of yoghurts, for example, have typically shrunk from 8oz servings to 6oz servings, according to FDA research, and the labelling would change to reflect that.
But in most cases, serving sizes will jump. A portion of ice cream, for instance, would now be measured as a cup, rather than half a cup. Health officials hope the move will encourage consumers to take a more sober look at their eating habits.
Mrs Obama told the audience of public health officials and food industry executives at the White House that the new proposals would be open to consultation in the coming months, but made clear she expected significant change.
Kathleen Sebelius, the health and human services secretary, said the scale of the US “obesity epidemic” made it imperative that the guidelines were updated.
Obesity in children trebled between the 1970s and 2005, and officials estimate nearly half of Americans could be obese by 2020 if trends continue.
But Sebelius claimed recent data showing a drop in obesity among pre-schoolers was “a sigh that our efforts are beginning to work”.
Mrs Obama added: “We are starting to see some changes but we are nowhere near the end of this road.”
FDA officials acknowledge that the move may prove controversial for some in the food industry, whose lobbyists have long fought efforts to tighten labelling rules, and industry “stakeholders” will be invited to comment before the FDA can proceed.
“We recognise that people will have strong opinions about this, which is why we have tried to root our methodology in research about how people act in the real world,” one administration official told the Guardian.
“I don’t encounter anyone who is thoughtful in the industry who does not understand that it is important to keep the labels up to date with the science.”

An even bigger fight with the food industry is expected over proposed changes to how sugar levels are displayed on packaging.
Under the plans, manufacturers would be forced to estimate how much extra sugar they have put into natural food products, and to keep records for at least two years so they can prove the difference between natural and added sugars if challenged by the FDA.
There will also be tighter guidelines on displaying warnings about excessive salt content and more focus on minerals and vitamins that are deemed essential for a healthy diet.
In general, the proposals aim to bring food labelling up to date with modern nutritional science and will shift the focus of labelling away from crude calculations of fat content and toward calorie levels, which will be displayed more prominently.
“Our guiding principle here is very simple: that you as a parent and a consumer should be able to walk into your local grocery store, pick up an item off the shelf, and be able to tell whether it’s good for your family,” said the first lady in a briefing given to reporters in advance of her speech.
“So this is a big deal, and it’s going to make a big difference for families all across this country.”

Among specific changes proposed to reflect scientific research over the last 20 years, the FDA wants to update daily values for nutrients like sodium, dietary fibre and vitamin D.
It will also require manufacturers to declare the amount of potassium and vitamin D on the label, because they are deemed new “nutrients of public health significance”.
Calcium and iron would continue to be required, and vitamins A and C could be included on a voluntary basis.
The FDA also said that while it would continue to require “total fat,” “saturated fat,” and “trans fat”on the label, “calories from fat” would be removed because research shows the type of fat is more important than the amount.
“For 20 years consumers have come to rely on the iconic nutrition label to help them make healthier food choices,” said FDA commissioner Margaret Hamburg.
“To remain relevant, the FDA’s newly proposed Nutrition Facts label incorporates the latest in nutrition science as more has been learned about the connection between what we eat and the development of serious chronic diseases impacting millions of Americans.”

One year after delaying Obama’s nutrition rules, Trump’s FDA says it will embrace them
The Trump administration will encourage the food industry to reduce the salt in processed foods and will take steps to overhaul some food labels to make them easier to understand, Food and Drug Administration Commissioner Scott Gottlieb announced Thursday.
The FDA will also move forward with Obama-era plans to require calorie labeling on restaurant menus and new “Nutrition Facts” panels on food products, two rules the agency had delayed.
The wait had alarmed consumer watchdogs and public health advocates, who have long feared that nutrition would suffer under a White House that has championed industry deregulation and criticized concerns about child obesity. But in a speech that seemed designed to signal that nutrition is still a priority at President Trump’s FDA, Gottlieb said his agency would launch a comprehensive, multi-year package of nutrition initiatives this summer, with the goal of tackling health conditions such as obesity and heart disease.
“I’m committed to advancing our work in nutrition as one tool to help reduce health disparities and improve the lives of all Americans,” Gottlieb told a gathering of industry representatives, consumer watchdogs and academics in Washington, “and to help every family live more free from the burden of preventable illness.”
The FDA initiatives announced Thursday are part of what Gottlieb has termed the agency’s “Nutrition Innovation Strategy.” Many of them continue programs begun under the Obama administration, such as menu labeling and sodium reduction.
In 2016, for instance, the FDA announced plans to nudge the food industry toward cutting salt, releasing voluntary two-year and 10-year sodium reduction targets for more than 150 foods, including snacks and frozen pizza. While not required, the reduction targets would put significant public pressure on food manufacturers.
Those plans stalled over objections from the food industry officials and some lawmakers in Congress who have argued that it is difficult to cut salt from recipes and that the science on sodium and health is unsettled. Earlier this month, the Salt Institute, an industry group, asked the FDA to reconsider that science as it develops the 2020 Dietary Guidelines for Americans.
But on Thursday, Gottlieb signaled loudly that the agency would work to reduce sodium in the food supply, calling salt reduction the “single [most] effective public health action related to nutrition.” The FDA will release new, short-term sodium reduction targets in 2019, Gottlieb said, and will continue to advocate for longer-term reductions to prevent health conditions linked to overly salty diets, such as high blood pressure.
Americans eat an estimated 3,400 milligrams of sodium each day on average, though the government recommends consuming no more than 2,300 milligrams.
“I can't discuss a meaningful nutrition initiative without exploring what can be done to encourage the reduction of sodium in foods,” Gottlieb said.
The FDA is committing to other Obama-era policies, as well. On May 8, Gottlieb said, chain restaurants and grocery stores will be required to display calorie and other nutrition information on their menus, following a one-year delay the agency granted at the behest of industry last year, shortly after Trump took office.
Foodmakers will also have until January 2020 to roll out the new Nutrition Facts panel, including information about added sugars and emphasizing calorie counts in bold letters. The FDA had delayed the panel, championed by former first lady Michelle Obama, after industry groups complained they did not have enough time to make the changes. But Gottlieb implied that there would be no further extensions, noting that some food companies have already rolled out the new panels.
“Consumers are starting to have access to an updated label that's based on current science and provides more information to empower them to choose healthful diets,” he said.
In addition to the Obama policies, Gottlieb is considering new nutrition policies. The agency is debating a voluntary, front-of-pack labeling system, the commissioner said, that would give consumers clearer information about a product’s healthfulness.
The FDA is also evaluating food manufacturers’ use of health and science marketing claims, including the term “healthy,” and will seek to make ingredient information clearer, Gottlieb said. Food companies may soon print “vitamin B6” on their labels instead of “pyridoxine,” for instance.
And the agency may revisit its regulations on the content of processed foods to make it easier for companies to make their recipes more healthful. Current regulations require that cheese contain a certain amount of sodium, for instance, which makes salt reduction difficult.
Gottlieb emphasized that many of the new initiatives are designed to nudge food companies to voluntarily make their products healthier and to reward the ones that do so. That differs slightly from the approach under the Obama administration, experts in the audience said, but they described themselves as relieved and reassured that the Trump FDA appears to be pursuing similar goals.
Margo Wootan, the vice president for nutrition at the Center for Science in the Public Interest, has criticized the FDA's delays on menu labeling and the new Nutrition Facts Panel, as well as a decision last year by Agriculture Secretary Sonny Perdue to delay scheduled sodium reductions in school lunches. She is among a number of public health advocates who have warned that an industry-friendly administration bent on rolling back regulation could do serious damage to nutrition.
Aside from the delays, some advocates have criticized the FDA for discontinuing in December its Food Advisory Committee, an independent expert panel that advised the agency on emerging food safety and nutrition issues. And others have accused the agency of giving some companies a pass on added-sugar labels, allowing them to explain in small print why products such as maple syrup and cranberry juice have such high added-sugar numbers.
