Gin and Tonic with Cointreau

Servings

Ingredients

  • 1 lime wedge

  • 1/4 cup gin

  • 1/4 cup tonic water

  • 2 teaspoons Cointreau

Recipe Preparation

  • Place lime wedge and gin in small glass; mash with back of spoon. Add tonic water and Cointreau; stir to blend. Fill with ice and serve.

White Lady Recipe

This version of the White Lady is light and fresh, blending the subtle botanicals of gin with the sweetness of Cointreau and the tartness of lemon juice. It's the work of Kazuo Uyeda, famed Japanese bartender and author of Cocktail Techniques. The focus and concentration involved in the Japanese style of bartending is truly amazing.

Cocktail Techniques outlines the process of bartending that defines the Japanese style—the recipes are only part of what makes each cocktail successful. Every movement, every thought of the bartender contributes to the experience, and the cocktail itself is only a portion of the final equation. The recipes, of course, do matter quite a bit for each classic recipe in the book, Uyeda includes the original version alongside the proportions he uses. In the introduction for the White Lady, for example, Uyeda explains that the drink is simply a gin Sidecar, and elaborates on how the use of his hard shake technique requires that a different ratio of gin be used in his recipe.

Though the proportion of gin is high in Uyeda's iteration, his technique skillfully blends the flavors of the cocktail in such a way that it tastes as lovely and ethereal as it looks. In a pinch, you can use any triple sec, but there is no substitute for Cointreau's flavor and I highly recommend using the real thing. For the gin, use a London Dry style like Martin Miller's or Beefeater stay away from Tanqueray, which has a more pronounced juniper profile that won't play as well here.

This may look like a refreshing mineral water but remember it’s pretty potent!

  1. Muddle the cucumber in the bottom of a glass, top with ice, gin, and soda water
  2. Garnish with cucumber and a mint sprig.

Gin- Cointreau Drink

I am not a connoisseur when it comes to spirits, cocktails, wine, I am a trained chef and I like to use my judgement, knowledge in creating different types of drinks. I am also not a big fan of cocktails, I like hard drinks or wines, but since we have moved to Singapore we have almost stopped drinking wine, hence I find myself creating new drinks or cocktails.

After a productive day I like to fix myself a good drink and enjoy the evening peace, in Tokyo we both used to drink wine or whiskey but in Singapore because of the hot weather I find myself drinking a lot gin. Just a few days ago I was tired of my sickness and wanted to just calm my nerves so I came up with this drink. I can guarantee you, you will love this drink as much as I and my friends did. For this drink I used Hendrick’s gin which is one of my favourite once but you can use any gin you have.

  • 30 ml or 3 cl Hendrick’s Gin
  • 15 ml or 1.5 cl Cointreau
  • 1 cube of ice (you can use more, I don’t like to dilute my drink)
  • 250 ml tonic water
  • 2 lemon or orange slices
  • A dash of angostura bitters (optional)

In a glass place ice, pour both spirits and top it up with cold tonic water. Sprinkle the bitter.


Empress Gin &ndash This gin has a bit of flora notes.

Blue Curacao &ndash A blue colored, orange flavored liqueur.

Cointreau &ndash This is an orange flavored liqueur.

Tonic Water and a Squeeze of fresh lime juice.

Purple Sugar for the rim of the glass.


Ingredients:

Spoon of orange marmalade
40ml of gin
20ml lemon juice
12.5ml cointreau
Champagne
Tiny triangle of toast

Pour the gin, cointreau, lemon juice and marmalade into a cocktail shaker. Stir to dissolve the marmalade, add ice and shake. Strain into a cocktail flute and top up with the champagne. Garnish with the toast.


Ingredients:

  • • 35ml Shetland Reel Simmer Gin
  • • 10ml orange and honey syrup
  • • 15ml fresh lemon juice
  • • Egg white
  • • 10ml blood orange

Method:

  1. 1. Shake ingredients in a shaker and dry shake until egg has combined with the rest of the drink.
  2. 2. Add ice and shake to chill and dilute.
  3. 3. Double strain into chilled coup and garnish with dried orange slice.

(For the orange and honey syrup: combine equal parts honey and water with orange peel in a pan. Heat until honey has dissolved and reduced slightly. Let it cool and then store it for up to 10 days in a jar/container)


How To Properly Serve & Drink Gin

/>Firstly, we often highlight in most of our spirit and whisky tasting guides that there’s no wrong or right way to enjoy your favourite libations. In fact, we would encourage you to experiment and try new ways of experiencing any type of beverage.

As far as gin is concerned, it was rarely sampled neat until recently. However, this is starting to change thanks to some of the complex contemporary gins that are currently being released. For instance, barrel-aged gin can be enjoy much like a whisky or rum.

/>Indeed, neat gin can be tasted at different temperatures in order to explore both its characteristics. At lower temperatures, the texture becomes quite unctuous. Meanwhile, warmer gin will reveal its more subtle aromas.

Otherwise, gin has traditionally been a celebrated base for many cocktails. In order for the gin to express its personality, it can be mixed with a neutral spirit like vermouth.

However, gin is incredibly versatile and can be mixed with a great variety of accompanying sodas and spirits as well as herbs and spices. In fact, we’ve already noted how some cocktails are actually designed for specific varieties or brands of gin.

Given the countless variety of gins with their own unique identities, they offer a plethora of cocktail opportunities. When ordering or mixing your own, you can enjoy finding ways to complement or contrast their flavours.

You can achieve this either with accompanying spirits, sodas, and cordials as well as an assortment of herbs, spices, and fruit.
