New Study: ‘Short Bursts’ of Tetris can Curb Your Appetite

New Study: ‘Short Bursts’ of Tetris can Curb Your Appetite

A few minutes of Tetris might be the key to staying away from all your unhealthy food cravings, according to new research

Looking to eat better? Try three minutes of Tetris.

According to a new study published in the Appetite psychology journal, Tetris might be the key to eating well and keeping our food cravings at bay. In a sample of 119 subjects, researchers found that the visual distraction provided by just three minutes of Tetris was enough to curb food, alcohol, and tobacco cravings by 24 percent. The idea behind the research is based on a theory that suggests the importance of visual imagery in creating food temptations.

During the study, the “natural cravings” of the 119 subjects were measured before the subjects were divided into two groups: the group that got to play Tetris, and the control group. In the latter, participants waited for a game of Tetris to load, which it never did.

After three minutes of Tetris, the test group reported a 24 percent reduction in cravings compared to the control group. Although the success of Tetris as an appetite suppressant is a welcome surprise, this isn't the first time that food and video games have been found to pair well.

Professor Jackie Andrade, one of the researchers behind the study, told PsyBlog, “Episodes of craving normally only last a few minutes, during which time an individual is visualizing what they want and the reward it will bring... But by playing Tetris, just in short bursts, you are preventing your brain creating those enticing images and without them the craving fades.”

Curb Your Chocolate Cravings

Can't resist candy? Keep your running shoes handy. A quick bout of exercise can curb a chocolate craving , finds a new British study.

When chocolate eaters were deprived of the sweet stuff for 2 days, then asked to either sit quietly or complete a short treadmill run, people who sat still gobbled up nearly twice as much of the candy when it was presented to them.

&ldquoExercise attenuates symptoms of stress such as tension, boredom, and fatigue," says says study coauthor Hwajung Oh, Ph.D. It&rsquos also possible that concentrating on exercising suppresses your thoughts about chocolate and your initial attraction to it, he adds.

Short bursts of physical activity throughout the day&mdashfor example, three 10- to 15-minute walks&mdash may help boost self control so you&rsquore less likely to succumb in the face of temptation, Oh says.

Difference Between Oatmeal Varieties

If you’re standing in front of your grocery shelf, you’ll find a wide range of different oatmeal varieties. I’ll shortly explain the different varieties and tell you which type I prefer using in weight loss smoothies.

The main difference between the three varieties is how much the oat groat has been processed. This gives them different textures and health benefits as well.

Instant Oats -You’ve probably grown up with Quacker. Instant oats are also known as quick oats. This variety is the most processed of the three varieties. They are cooked, dried, and then pressed. Quick oats, as the name suggests, require less cooking time than other varieties. They should also be the least desirable when it comes to nutritional content and health benefits. They’re thinner and have a softer texture than rolled oats. Their taste is mild and they work out well in smoothies.

Steel-Cut Oats – These oats are sometimes referred to as Scottish oats or Irish oats. They’re less processed than rolled oats. Although all oats varieties are healthy, steel-cut oats are the least processed and therefore healthiest oat variety out there. They have a chewy consistency and take longer to cook. Steel-cut oats almost look like rice. If you want to use them for smoothies, it’s best to soak them beforehand.

Rolled Oats – Rolled oats are the variety I like to use the most in my smoothies. The whole grains are first steamed and then pressed flat with steel rollers. They have the perfect taste and consistency for great-tasting smoothies.

Now that we know the difference between the most common oatmeal types, it’s about time for some delicious smoothie recipes.

Step on a Scale Once a Day

Shutterstock

A new study published in the journal Obesity discovered that weighing in daily can help the number on the scale drop faster. Participants who consistently weighed themselves lose 4% more weight over the course of 3 months and then over 6% more weight in 6 months compared to those who didn't keep track of their weight. Daily self-weighing gives you more opportunities to see the impact of your behaviors on your weight and it helps you to identify when you may need to make adjustments sooner rather than later.

Perched On The Rooftop

Overlooking the swimming pool from the Spa at Hablis Hotels

A romantic getaway with your loved one.

What strikes you at once is the beauty of this place, being surrounded by the five elements of nature, water, wood, air, stone and fire. The concept is to make one feel as close to nature as possible.

It is quite unlike most other spas in the city where natural sunlight is shut out and the spaces are illumined by dim lights and candles. Jessy, the therapist explains that at Hablis Spa they believe in letting sunlight stream through gently, thereby energizing the spa recipients in the most natural way.

The Spa lounge at Hablis Hotels by day

The first thing I noticed as soon as I stepped into the Spa is that it is just cool enough. That right balance of temperature, not so cold as to ask for an extra cover. There is the pleasant fragrance of aroma oils lingering in the air that sets-in the relaxing mood. The lounge is aesthetically appointed to seat their guests while the therapists take you through the ritual of the awaiting spa therapy.

And this is how pretty it looks by night !

A soft, white robe made from 100% Turkish cotton is handed to you to change into, while you secure your belongings in a locker in the Hydrotherapy Chamber.

A tastefully decorated Uruli pleases your eye as you walk towards the cabin set for the therapy. Most guests stop to take a picture of the Uruli I am sure, just like I did.

The Welcome Foot Bath

The Foot Bath is another welcome sight. The ritual is akin to India’s traditional way of welcoming guests in days of yore. Staipa, the male therapist explains that at Hablis Spa, the best of Eastern and Western practices and techniques are harnessed to give their guests as holistic an experience as possible.

Foot Bath at the Spa at Hablis Hotels

Soothing warm water is mixed with milk and certain flower petals along with coffee beans in another Uruli to soak and stimulate the feet. If you are wondering why coffee beans, read more about coffee’s magical effect on tired feet. After the feet are soaked and you think its done, more pampering happens. The nerve-endings in the feet are stimulated by rubbing on them rounded stone pebbles and one can feel the tensions in the body oozing away already. You are then led to your spa bed and allowed to take in slow, deep breaths and bask in pleasant anticipation of the massage.

The Stay In Touch Therapy Massage

Mind and body begin to align as you lie on the bed sheathed cozily with soft pristine white towels instead of the robe and eyes masked gently to set in that meditative mood. Staipa begins the massage for the male while Jessie does so for the female guest, starting with the feet and then working upwards, combining slow pressure and expert hand movements with gentle stretching to unwind tight muscles and slip into a blissful state. Call it a duet experience if you will. You know your partner is around you, connected to you in a surreal kind of way and there is nothing more beatific than that.

Preblended relaxing aromatic oils at the Spa at Hablis Hotels

A sense of well-being pervades as the relaxing pre-blended signature aroma oils start working their magic on both bodies. Lost in time, you are left wanting for more when the therapists gently wake you up from your snoozes. Its kind of comforting to know that the ritual is not over yet and there is something more to look forward to.

The Rose Petal Milk Bath

Rose petal bath – representative picture only

Time to soak into more goodness as the couple-bath tub is filled with warm water, a generous dose of milk and rose petals, rock salt and a gentle shower gel. If the aromatic oils have left you feeling light in mind and body, the rose petal milk bath will take that sense of well-being to the next level. Eased of toxins and tensions, softness engulfs your skin.

While we all know about the benefits of milk and rose petals for the skin, a small note on what rock salt does to our bodies.

It can be used as a bath or body salt. You can mix a table-spoon of rock salt in your bath water to have a relaxing bath. Bathing in rock salt water combats water retention, soothes sore muscles, regulates sleep, detoxifies your body and lowers your blood pressure. It also eases stress and body pains. Stay in the bath as long as you want, you are allowed thirty minutes to do so. And when you are done with that , step into the steam and shower chamber. Suit yourselves as you regulate the temperature and steam with the red knob on the wall opposite. Now indulge in a shower to complete the cleansing with a gentle herbal shampoo and a shower gel. Feels so light that you wish you could just be carried out and did not have to walk !

An elixir awaits you as you change into your clothes and come back to the foyer. You can choose between their signature herbal tea or a refreshing mocktail.

Time to head home, back to reality, but I think the indulgence can continue with a glass of wine perhaps or just slip into blissful sleep in the comfort of your bed. Most often, we go to the spa for a me-time, but this Stay In Touch duet experience is clearly an our-time.

How to Make the Perfect Snack

When it comes to snacks, nuts and nut butter are the key options. According to research, these two options used in moderation can help you lose weight. They send the body a signal that is alright to lose some of the weight and they are natural. You can add almond butter to the plan, with a quantity of up to two tablespoons per day. In this way, you can provide omega 3 and proteins to your body. It has to be almond butter, not peanut butter, because people can hardly control themselves when it comes to consuming peanut butter. (1 Serving of nuts is 1 oz or about 22 nuts. Make sure to buy raw and unsalted)

You can also add one apple, because in conjunction with almond butter, it can be a real game changer. The combination is sweet and satisfying. Another addition is one cup of 2% of plain Greek yogurt per day. This is the only dairy that you are allowed to use in the plan. Dr. Oz recommends this yogurt because it has probiotics. Add liquid stevia if you don’t like the taste of this yogurt. Other yogurts and other Greek yogurt varieties have artificial sweeteners and they trick your taste buds.

Joy is another woman who is invited in the show of Dr. Oz. She is a police officer working long hours and she has lost 10.2 pounds with the plan. The snacks help her get through the day. She keeps a bag of mixed nuts in the car, so she benefits from it whenever she feels the need to. Because she feels that plain Greek yogurt is a little bitter, she found an alternative in the form of a homemade sauce with cucumber, garlic, lemon and other ingredients. She also cuts the apple in four and has one quarter after every meal to feel fuller.

A 5-Day Detox Diet That Requires Zero Cleanses and Green Juices

We're not going to tell you to "cleanse" or pick up a single bottle of green juice. This is the shortcut to better health we've all been waiting for.

The holidays may be in your rearview mirror, but the bloating and sluggishness that come with too many residual desserts is not. That ends now. Registered dietitian Wendy Bazilian, coauthor of The Superfoods Rx Diet, put together a simple plan that will help you stop craving junk and start loving real food again. And the habits you form will stick with you long after this no-sweat, super-short detox ends.

Kick out the extra sugar. Cookies. Carbs. The thing so many winter eats have in common is sugar. Overindulging causes your blood sugar to spike and then crash, depleting your energy and triggering cravings, Bazilian says. That's why it's gotta go. Skip foods with added sugars (cereal, ketchup, flavored yogurt), as well as sugary drinks (soda, juice, even booze). You might be on edge at first, but cutting back shouldn't be so painful with these strategies, .

Walk for 7 minutes after every meal. While you work to regain control of what you put on your plate, aim to torch any extra calories with a short stroll. "Walking for just seven minutes when you've finished eating may burn up to 100 calories by the end of the day," Bazilian says. Plus, research shows that short bouts of cardio can help speed up digestion and lower your blood sugar. Trapped inside? Walk the stairs or march in place in front of the TV.

Still no extra sugar. You may start to experience "sugar headaches" because your body isn't used to not getting any, but stay strong&ndashit will pass.

Keep walking for 7 minutes after meals.

Double up on your fruits and veggies. Because from here on you'll be cutting something out of your diet, and a girl's got to eat. Replacing high-calorie foods with produce (say, by swapping the rice in your stir-fry for extra broccoli) can save hundreds of cals a day. And the phytonutrients can help repair cell damage caused by too many bad choices, Bazilian says.

Amp up the flavor. "We eat food because it tastes good," says Bazilian. Which means you have to make your now-healthy meals sing. Try adding an herb or spice to every dish. It'll make your taste buds happy while also cutting back on bloat-inducing salt. Bonus: Studies show that hot spices like cayenne can curb your appetite and help you better burn off a meal.

Nix the grains. Whole grains are healthy, but easy to overeat. Plus, your body converts carbs to glycogen, which causes you to retain water. "Taking this one thing off your plate is so simple," Bazilian says, "and you'll see an immediate payoff as you shed some water weight." You'll feel amazing at the end of the day&mdashand that's just what you need to tackle tomorrow's new challenge.

Still no extra sugar.

Keep walking for 7 minutes after meals.

Stick with the extra fruits and veggies.

Continue amping up the flavor.

Drink your day. You're in a much better place now&mdashyou've reined in your appetite and squashed stubborn cravings. So today, you're doing the most cleanse-y part of this detox and going on a nearly all-liquids diet. By that, we mean nutritious, satisfying stuff: a protein-rich smoothie at breakfast, a broth- or purée-based soup for lunch, and a hearty stew and salad for dinner (you can have solid food if it's a vegetable). Liquids are easy to digest and help your body better absorb nutrients, giving your gut a much-needed reboot, Bazilian says.

Still no extra sugar.

Keep walking for 7 minutes after meals.

Stick with the extra fruits and veggies.

Continue amping up the flavor.

Go meat-free. You've heard of meat-free Mondays? We're challenging you to do it for two days. Instead of animal protein, stock your plate with plant proteins like tofu, beans, lentils, and nuts. They're just as satisfying and, unlike burgers (sorry), they're also packed with fiber, which boosts digestion and helps to keep bloat at bay, Bazilian says. "When you start eating meat again, a smaller portion will seem perfect." And that's the goal, because research shows that people who eat more plants than meat may be slimmer and healthier.

Still no extra sugar.

Keep walking for 7 minutes after meals.

Stick with the extra fruits and veggies.

Continue amping up the flavor.

Stay meat-free.

Congratulations! "You're back in the driver's seat," Bazilian says. "You have control over what you eat, when, and how much." And if you can take what you've learned this week&mdashhow to eat well without feeling deprived&mdashyou'll have more energy, better health, and a smaller waistline, not just now, but always. And you got there with more than just lemon water! Not too shabby, lady.

Chiles are high in Vitamin A, which can naturally boost your
immune system. The more chiles you use in flavoring your chili
dish, the more Vitamin A you are putting into your body. The
boost to your immune system from the Vitamin A is a welcome plus
during the winter cold and flu season.

Apparently the capsaicin in chili peppers also can help regulate
your blood sugar. A July 2006 study in the Journal of Clinical
Nutrition found that the amount of insulin that was needed to lower
patients’ blood sugar after a meal is lower if the meal contains
chile peppers. It’s true that your fiery chili is good for
you!

Add Hot Peppers to Naturally Curb Your Appetite

Historically foods have been used to prevent food spoilage during storage before the invention of refrigeration. Some cultures turned to hot peppers and powders to protect stored food from going bad. Not only did the process work, but people developed a desire for extra zing in their food. While everybody hopes for fast weight loss, it is important that you don't lose too much weight too quickly, as it can increase your health risks as well as make it easy to gain the weight back.

Natural Peppers Can Help Manage Your Weight

Cayenne pepper is a natural herb that may help you lose weight, curb your appetite and speed up your metabolism. Moreover, it will cause your body to burn more calories. The active ingredient in cayenne pepper is a thermogenic chemical called capsaicin. Capsaicin is the flavorless natural substance that can increase your metabolism through thermogenesis (heat produced by burning fat). Adding hot red peppers to daily menu plan can therefore help with weight loss.

A recent study at Purdue University documented the effects of red pepper used in natural form compared to participants who took a capsule. The taste and sensory effect of the natural peppers sprinkled on the food maximized its impact on appetite, body temperature and calories burned. Ironically, due to their lack of exposure, people who do not typically eat spicy foods (i.e. - hot peppers) appear to benefit the most from turning up the heat with his or her menu plan.

Use Seasonings on Your Weight Loss Journey to Stay on Track

Using food seasonings creatively may help you stay on track. When you create a calorie deficit that is too large, it is not sustainable for weight loss and creates unwanted health risks, such as nutrient deficiencies. Changes in carbohydrate consumption over human history appear to have affected bacteria in the mouth and gut leading to an unhealthy increase in harmful inflammation. This is where innovative food seasonings can help you lose weight in the form of stored fat rather than lean muscle mass.
